Built as a behemoth, this rare release (the first since 2014) of elite Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon (86%) and Shiraz parcels from the Geier Vineyard stands more like a monument than a mere drink, its stern sense of purpose removing any sense of simple joy. Correctly identifying 2018 as an exceptional Barossa vintage – especially for Cabernet, which is a majestic beauty when the stars align – extended maceration on skins has ensured it’s all about power, presence and persistence. A dark, inky colour matches the palate intensity, built on a dense meld of blackberry, mulberry, liquorice and dark earth. A rich, seductive waft of fresh purple fruits fills the nose, cloaked in French oak, though the sum of all this intensity is too severe and unyielding in its youth. At this stage, it’s purely a futures investment. It’ll need another five years just for the Cabernet’s seductive qualities to bloom. Just 28 barrels were made with limited bottles relesed in Australia at AU$350.
