The decision by Yalumba to purchase land along Coonawarra’s famed terra rosa strip in the 1980s has proved to be meritorious, especially due to the consistently high quality of Cabernet Sauvignon from its Menzies vineyard. The aromas immediately point to classic Coonawarra characteristics of mint and eucalyptus in lock with lean blackberry and dusty red earth. The flavours achieve lovely sweet/savoury balance, remaining dry without seeming mean or wizened. A firm palate is wrapped by tight, fine-grain tannins that remain stern and resilient, supported by a strong oak framework, with a tingle of spice lingering as a final note. This still has many years ahead in the cellar.
