A compelling case for Yalumba winemaker Louisa Rose’s argument that Viognier can produce wines of intrigue and unique character after long cellaring. Matured for nine months in a mix of 4% new and older French oak barriques, this has retained fetching apricot, ginger and white pepper flavours, though the palate has entered a lean savoury spectrum with a brooding richness and luscious texture. It still retains surprising freshness and vitality on the palate after 20 years in bottle, thanks to this being the first Virgilius vintage sealed under screw cap.
