Notes of hazelnut, brûlée and salted liquorice, with flecks of candied lime, ginger and curry leaf. A thrust of extract and parry of juicy acidity marks the generous mid-palate, bound to mineral torque and an edgy phenolic cadence. This has little to do with obvious fruit. Winemaker Patrick Sullivan believes that crushing before pressing, a controlled oxidative approach, conveys texture and regionality better than the more commonly practised whole-bunch pressing. Excellent length and ample joy. Little more to ask for. Immense power, depth and prodigious tension: the signature of Gippsland's marginal climate. An excellent Chardonnay.
