Savoury and genteel on a nose that's all tobacco leaf, leather, old bookshop and cigar box, complemented by mixed spice, tea leaf, dried herbs, rose potpourri, sour cherry, Dutch liquorice, red earth and red plum. Tannins are tea-like, almost bony and chalky, a little rustic around the edges and with a lot of grip. On the palate, blackcurrant pastille, pencil shavings and juicy acidity; this is a more linear iteration of the variety, grown in a marginal climate. The quality of the fruit and intensity is there, as is a decent length and a compelling smoky note that intensifies in the glass. Whole berries, cold soak for 19 days on skins.
