One of the grand old men of the Wachau, F.X.Pichler is now in his eighties, and the estate has been run for many years by his able son Lucas. The nose is initially reticent, but with aeration it opens to display ripe apricot aromas and a dash of tropical fruit. Nonetheless there's an underlying stoniness too. It's voluptuous and powerful, with an imposing structure a strong minerality. The wine seems still in its infancy, though it's not inaccessible, and its exceptional length should ensure a long and radiant future.
