Viña Ventisquero was a pioneer of viticulture in the hot, dry Atacama desert. Planted in 2008, its Huasco Valley vineyard lies 24km from the Pacific, where the soils have a marked salinity. Grapes are fermented in stainless steel and aged on lees for eight months. Kalfu means ‘blue’ in Mapudungun, the local native language, while sumpai are mythological creatures that care for rivers, lakes and oceans. Peter Richards MW: Aromas of citrus rind, anise, roasted green pepper, a touch honeyed. Rounded and succulent, mineral and serious; dry but lifted. Serious, complex, layered and replete. Wonderful. Ben Gubbins: Ripe fruit, asparagus, a hint of petrol. The palate is generous and remains fresh, with some minerality, too. Lemon on the finish, which has persistence. Dirceu Vianna Junior MW:  Ageing gracefully, still notes of citrus, honey, chilli pepper and a hint of tropical fruit. Lovely creamy texture on the palate. Harmonious, refreshing and long.
