Viña Ventisquero planted its first vines in Chile’s northern winemaking frontier – Atacama, the driest desert in the world – in 2008. Here, the fascinating Tara project was born. Just 15km from the Pacific, the vineyard relies on the cooling influence of the camanchaca sea fog, which brings much-needed morning humidity and cold night-time temperatures. While the climate has proved favourable for producing refreshing coastal wines, the greatest challenge has been the salt – in the air, the irrigation water and the soil. Yet this coastal salinity has become a defining feature of Tara’s racy, mineral-driven style. Amanda Barnes MW: Deliciously distinctive, with notes of ripe peach, thyme and salt-crusted pears. Creamy, mouthfilling texture underpinned by vibrant acidity. Florencia Gomez: Pure-fruited, velvety, inviting and easy. Complex yet in a gentle way with green pepper, mint, lime skin and pineapple. A fun, unfiltered wine. Benjamin Gubbins: Slight cloudy; yoghurt, pineapple. The tropical note leads on the palate, with lemon curd and apple. Good acidity and tension. A happy wine.
