Perhaps the most singular Viognier in South America, Tara is remarkable not only for its terroir but also for its winemaking. Sourced from Ventisquero’s extreme vineyard in the Atacama desert close to the Pacific ocean, this wine reflects the rare climatic intersection of desert and cool coast. The winemaking is equally distinctive: a solera-style blend spanning more than five vintages, followed by long bottle ageing for even greater complexity. Amanda Barnes MW: Rich in umami, with pungent seaside character, peach and white blossom from Viognier beneath. Distinctive and engaging, enticing balance. Florencia Gomez: Starting a bit reductive on the nose, it’s bright-fruited and surprisingly crisp on the palate. Lively, with a long, juicy pineapple finish. Benjamin Gubbins: Markedly different style of Viognier, more sour and citric, like underripe nectarine. A bit cloudy, but light and enjoyable.
