Mauricio Gonzalez and his wife Daniela embody the artisanal spirit of small producers in southern Chile, continuing the ancient tradition of making Pipeño – the natural garage wines of the region, fermented in lagar (shallow stone tanks used for crushing grapes) and aged in old raulí pipas (barrels of native Chilean wood). There are a handful of great Pipeños on the market today, and this is one of my favourites – it shows the savoury and earthy style you expect from Pipeño, while also having the fresh cranberry notes and vibrancy that make País such a delicious variety, especially in Bío Bío.
