Chile

One of Chile’s oldest wineries, founded by Matías Cousiño in 1856. His son Luis and his wife Isidora Goyenechea imported Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot vines from Pauillac. Macul is located on Santiago’s outskirts, on the approach to the Andes foothills. The 100% Merlot fruit for this wine comes from low-yielding vines on the oldest Merlot block, planted in 1981. Dror Nativ MW: Hedonistic. Opulent blackberry and dark cherry. Well-integrated tannins and concentration offer ageing potential. Excellent complexity from cedar, mint and spice. Ben Gubbins: Intense and complex, with layers of baked fruit, cedar, caramel and a hint of mint and meat. Rich, ripe, round tannins and good acidity hold the fruit together. Andy Howard MW: Cool, reserved. Concentration and power, but also elegance. Black cherry and berry fruits. Subtle, integrated oak. Very classy.
