When Chilean winemaker Francisco Baettig started his eponymous wine label with partner Carlos de Carlos in 2012, the pair chose to plant vines in southern Chile’s Malleco valley, where their families share deep roots and entwined histories. With its relatively mild climate and deep volcanic trumao soils, Malleco has quietly been building a reputation for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir – the very varieties that Baettig chose to cultivate. Drawing on Burgundy-inspired techniques, the wine is barrel-fermented using indigenous yeasts, then aged for 13 months in 37% new 300-litre and 400-litre French oak barrels. Amanda Barnes MW: Seductive baking spices, brioche, stony minerality and savouriness, all balanced by creamy volume. A Burgundian vision of Malleco. Florencia Gomez: Floral and expressive, mouthwatering with a savoury/umami undertone. Fluid, bright, with a restrained fruit profile. A gastronomic wine. Benjamin Gubbins: Exotic cardamom, apple, butter aromas, a hint of honey. Citrus and apple, concentrated with a citrus finish. Round, complex, bags of personality.
