The Crazy Rows project was born of the desire to revitalise heritage vines and varieties in Chile. Carignan is one of four varieties grown for Crazy Rows, with the grapes coming from the 70-year-old vines in the Maule Valley. The vines grow on ancient granitic sandy loam soils with most of the work being done by hand including at harvest. Fermentation is spontaneous via indigenous yeasts with no temperature control and using concrete tanks, before ageing for six months also in concrete. Alistair Cooper MW: Vivid nose with dark fruits, slight peppery herbaceous note, too. Nice salinity and concentration, savoury and sweet at the same time. Dirceu Vianna Junior MW: Inviting and seductive, juicy fruit combining with a hint of rusticity and leafy notes. Firm and refreshing, will benefit from some time. Big and powerful, ambitious wine. David Williams: Lovely depth to the nose, forest fruit, excellent ripeness and a wiry tannic framework. A squirt of juicy black fruit and liquorice on the finish. Very appealing.
