The Penfolds experiment of working with fruit grown in China is quickly gaining traction. This smart medium-bodied blend comes from two source districts – Cabernet Sauvignon (77%) from Shangri-la region in the south-western Yunnan province, and Marselan (23%) from the remote northern Xingxia region. The Cabernet component brings aromas of blackberry, fennel and baking spices plus a pleasing mineral dryness, but the X-factor is brought by Marselan (a genetic fusion of Grenache with Cabernet Sauvignon) which adds bright plummy flavour and a lush sunniness to the mid-palate. This blend shows much potential.
