Young winemaker, Damir Mihelić returned to his hometown to continue the family tradition in Novigrad, Croatia, and has used amphorae since 2017. The 3.5 hectares of vines grow in fields with indigenous grasses and nettles, with beehives surrounding the property. Horses are used instead of tractors as much as possible. 'I want to make a creamy, full-bodied Malvasia Istriana with ageing potential and secondary aromas,' he explains. According to Mihelić, the amphorae are the best choice for this purpose: 'Amphoras are neutral and let the grape variety express itself at the most,' he says. His 100% Malvasia Istriana 2018, called Madura, macerates on the skins for 15 days and ages for one year on the fine lees. The result is a rich, full-bodied, explosive and creamy wine with herbaceous aromas and flavours of beeswax, peaches and sweet spice. In the background, a subtle fine acidity gives length. 'My goal is to release this wine after four years in bottle. That's when you can feel the Mediterranean Sea in the glass,' Mihelić adds.
