Purchased by the Cuvelier family in 2001, Clos Fourtet is hard to miss, sitting proudly on the highest limestone plateau overlooking the town of St-Emilion, just a few steps from its cobbled streets. Now managed by Matthieu Cuvelier, with technical direction from Emmanuel de Saint Salvy, the estate has undergone extensive modernisation, with vineyard replantings and a new cellar finalised in 2012. Clos Fourtet is generally a reliable, confident and glossy wine that captures the saline quality of the plateau with ripe Merlot. Georgie Hindle: Milk chocolate, red cherry. Succulent from the off, this says, ‘Hello, drink me.’ Body, bounce, muscle and drive. What a wine! Arthur Coggill: Inviting nose of orange blossom, damson, plum and quince, spiced oak touches. Supple, no hard edges. Fresh and zippy with supporting tannins and great concentration. Tom King: Juicy loganberry, black cherry and caramelised oak. Mouthfilling but elegant, with a supple fluidity to the tannins. Rich, yet fun and generous.
