Marvellous notes of liquorice, truffle and brown sugar on the nose that deepen and open up with time in the glass to show a distinctly savoury evolution, but the nose never goes over the top, always retaining a rich black and red berry fruit character. On the palate the wine is still fresh and tremendously complex. It retains an elegant and dynamic balance after a half-century that is really astonishing. Enjoyed with friends from a private cellar in Burgundy, this was perhaps the wine of the trip.
