The warm spring in 1990 led to an early budbreak, but the flowering was disrupted by cold spells, reducing yields. After a hot, dry summer, late August rains refreshed the vines to produce fruit that was ripe and concentrated, with deep colour, plenty of tannins, and a lush warmth and generous nature. The black cherry and fig fruit have a spicy glow with suggestions of ginger, liquorice and a savoury, almost meaty edge that leads to a satisfyingly rich and long finish. There is still at least a couple of decades left for wine such as this.
