The change to taste a Musigny from this emblematic domain blind, when one has no idea exactly what's in the glass in front of you, is a rare opportunity: wines like this normally come accompanied by no little fanfare. In colour it's a translucent deep red, with no brown at all yet. The aromas are pure joy, and these are the unedited notes I jotted straight away: 'a lovely mature richness: all of the exhalations of the land at the end of a long summer. Mellow, full, animal, earthy: glowing and gorgeous. The best nose yet: the most complete and perfect.' More disciplined scrutiny reveals fine leather, cream and mushroom, but all the while dovetailed and intricately sewn into that quietly noble, fragrant fruit. 'Singing,' I jotted, about the palate this time, 'lively, fresh, sweet, poised red fruits. Not quite as concentrated as I expected, given the aromatic profile, and maybe not even quite as complex as that aromatic profile, but it has sustained fruit with a fine, stealthy grip though not 'tannic' per se. Svelte, light, balletic.' It all made sense when we saw the label: a lovely drinking wine.
