Surprisingly deep in colour, this is somewhat closed initially, but it opens marvellously on the palate with rich, plummy fruit aromas, hints of spice and bramble. It is more forward than the Charmes-Chambertin and also more substantial on the palate, with admirable density of texture and a good depth of fruit. Clean and pure, this is a winning Clos de la Roche that should drink well after five years in the cellar and for a further 20 beyond that.
