A late-release 1961 Chambertin from Leroy showed an impressive concentration of deep dark fruit on the nose, with notes of plum, black cherry, and fig accented with dark chocolate and a bit of ground coffee. The wine is intense and shows the influence of this concentrated vintage in its tannic, firm texture and fresh, lively acidity that carries the lush, sweetly mature fruit to a wonderful finish. Although this must be drinking near its peak, it shows no sign of decline and should continue in this vein for another 20 years.
