This wine was a bit of a disappointment. It feels washed out and lacking in ripeness – seemingly the antithesis of the Leroy style. The Bourgogne rouge is typically composed of declassified grapes from superior appellations – perhaps in 2003 the blend included grapes whose maturity was blocked by drought stress. The regional-level Bourgogne rouge from Maison Leroy commands a generous price given its status, and I confess that I don’t understand the logic in this particular instance. I would not advise further ageing on the strength of this example.
