Cristal Vinotheque Rosé comes from just four parcels – two each of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, all of which are vinified separately. Lecaillon cold-soaks the Pinot Noir grapes for ten days before racking off the juice, blending with the Chardonnay juice and then fermenting it as a white wine before it undergoes its ageing odyssey. The final blend is 55% Pinot Noir and 45% Chardonnay. It has a rose and copper hue, and shows a little more weight and depth than the 1995. Intense aromas of citrus and pear and toast lead to a savoury, mature palate with waves of salted caramel, dried fruits, almond and mandarin. There's lots of steely power and some chalky grip too, with great acidity and bite which gives way to roundness and depth on the mid-palate and finish. Though eminently drinkable and pleasurable now, this wine has a very long life ahead of i - if you can get any - in the UK, just 18 bottles are up for grabs.
