Nicolas Maillart's remarkable Pinot Noir from ungrafted vines planted on the sandy slopes of Éceuil in 1973 is one of the most striking wines from the Petite Montagne de Reims, presenting a concentrated and dramatic take on what is normally a rather softer, more fragrant style from this part of Champagne. The approachability is still there, though, in the sense of weightlessness, the settled mousse and the lifting, energetic finish, but the aromatic depth of spiced and roasted apple, hazelnut, salty bread, ripe raspberry and delicate green peppercorn brightness is relentlessly engaging.
