Nicolas Maillart took his family domaine out of the local cooperative in 2003. He has since been building a formidable reputation for complex, intense Champagnes based largely around Pinot Noir and Meunier from the northern Montagne de Reims. The result of extremely low yields, late harvests and vinification in oak, this gastronomic 100% Pinot Noir cuvée from the little-seen premier cru village of Villers-Allerand, just south of Reims, is all the more remarkable for having been produced without any added sulphites. Tom Hewson: Bold, gastronomic. Brown butter and spiced apple tart. Beautiful fruit intensity, heady perfume of baking spice and toasted nuts. An exciting, swashbuckling style! Eugenio Egorov: Mature nose of apples and pears with hints of cassis and orange blossom. Great fruit concentration, beautiful tension. Sarah Knowles MW: Full lemon, grapefruit and plum flavours. A touch of reduction and subtle notes of oak add to its charm, yet it’s fresh and bright on the finish.
