LV stands for longue vieillissement, or long ageing. This (1999) was the last vintage of Clos des Goisses before Charles Philipponnat joined, introducing partial steel fermentation and temperature control to the winery. This has a joyously old-school feeling to it, boomingly vinous and a little wild with smoke, dried lemons and spicy plum fruit sitting under ageing characters of floral honey and, at least in this bottle, a pronounced fresh mushroom note. It may not carry the polish of the Clos des Goisses from the following two decades, but the DNA of the vineyard is present and correct.
