Philipponnat's LV programme offers late-disgorged editions of their top cuvées. This 2002 of the superb 1522 cuvée, a vintage creation focused on the Maison's historical vineyards around Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, was unabashedly fabulous after 18 years on the lees; immediately sending out deep, inviting aromas perched between beautifully-preserved fruit - apricot jam, prune, dried pear - and maturing complexities of pine honey, toasted brown bread and forest floor, it delivered a beautifully tapered, refined palate that held all that aromatic swagger in check. A memorable bottle.
