Available as part of a two-bottle set called Le Contraste alongside the new 2015 vintage, this late release of the intense 1985 vintage of Rare is a real treat, from a time when the blend was rather similar to today but the wines were made without softening malolactic fermentation. Disgorged in February 2025 after 39 years on lees, it's a beautifully preserved, pure and complex wine of apricots in honey, Turkish delight, mandarin and deep sourdough savour, still remarkably fresh and vibrant with some of the concentration of the year still evident. There's a lovely lift of aromatic rose, blossom and orange peel on the close, a crunchy freshness and some citric freshness still. A remarkable old Champagne.
