Among the most remarkable bottles of old Champagne I have ever encountered, the Ruinart 1956 freshly disgorged without dosage was almost impossibly pristine and graceful, tasting in some ways like a wine 40 years younger, yet in complexity and interest very much a wine of serious age. It seems crass to ‘assess’ a rarity such as this, but with its forceful smoky citrus running through ultra-fresh orange zest, vanilla and mint its vibrancy is off the charts, even as more developed tones such as butter caramel, deep toasty nougat and bitter herbs emerge. Long, flowing and pristine, it was a memorable, freeze-framed gem in a condition that may be hard to replicate with many Champagnes of this age – or indeed other bottles of this very same vintage.
