A hot, dry Indian summer saved this difficult vintage, which featured fine degrees of ripeness but rather low yields. The variability of older vintages was on show here as the 1966 showed much more advanced evolution than either the 1956 or 1976 served either side, falling into rather simpler cooked apple, butter honey and slightly sharp volatile notes. It’s relative advancement highlights just how exceptional its neighbours were, though.
