Tasted among all the venerable bottles at an extraordinary vertical tasting back to 1926, the current release 2016 had its work cut out to impress. Impress it did though, rising above the memory of frost, mildew and sunburn which marked the season. It’s an airy, precise, polished style with ripe grapefruit oil and lime Chardonnay, pretty, fresh raspberry Pinot notes and a gentle age-developing honey, caramel and creamy white chocolate side starting to develop. With a glossy, sweet nut milk texture and silky mousse, the freshness of the vintage carries enough intensity that this wine should have no issues staying a long course.
