Yann Prophète produces a miniscule amount of extremely long-aged Chardonnay from Landreville, harvested so late in 2011 that all the pressing facilities were closed when he wanted to take the fruit in. It's deeply characterful, striking stuff, especially from a vintage with such a mixed reputation; there are aromas of chestnut honey, lemon cake, maple syrup and soft bread, the palate broad and unctuous but stopping short of clunkiness. It's a style richly marked by old oak fermentation and long lees-ageing, no doubt, but a fascinating wine to uncover.
