Philippe Peytavy showed me this 16-year-old version of the Huis Clos partly to prove how well his wines can age, but partly since Decanter picked this wine out shortly after release as being a world-beater. It’s still impressively coloured - a deep black-red with little sign as yet of any browning or fading. It smells sweet and warm, rich and resonant, with some of the classic Grés de Montpellier blackberry fruit still apparent in a generally well-rounded aromatic profile. This wine was barrel-fermented, a technique Philippe Peytavy later moved away from, though the oak notes are impalpable today. On the palate the wine is fresh, lively, close-textured and deep, without any hint of tiring. Herbal and fresh spice notes shade into menthol, but the core of this harmonious wine remains its soothing, well-rounded fruit.
