The original idea with this wine? They needed a white in France to smoke cigarettes with. Fermented in stainless steel and aged for eight months in equal parts stainless steel and French oak barriques. I love this wine—and you will too. I had never tasted Grenache Gris before, but Dave Phinney told me he once argued with a well-known, opinionated viticulturist who was convinced no such grape existed. ‘Fun stories around this wine,’ says Dave. The label depicts the view from a hotel in Barcelona, where he would stay on his trips to Europe. The wine itself is deeply flavourful, showing citrus and orchard fruits drizzled with wildflower honey, and for all its richness and viscous qualities, it remains beautifully balanced by a firm spine of bright, mineral acidity. Exquisite finish.
