The blend in Brigitte Chevalier’s schist-grown Les Bancels (which means ‘the terraces’ in Occitan) is mainly Syrah with smaller quantities of Grenache and Mourvèdre, and just a seasoning of Carignan. It’s elegant and translucent in colour, with clean, graceful plum and strawberry fruits. The flavours introduce ample herb and wild scrub notes with cade, juniper and savoury tobacco, to qualify the limpid red fruits. Delicate, expressive and finely judged.
