This super-showy Syrah (again with just a tiny seasoning of Grenache) isn't quite testosterone-fuelled, but it's deliciously assertive. Its name means 'the male', though it’s also an amalgamation of the first two letters of the owners’ childrens’ names, Mathias and Lena. The Syrah comes from the oldest parcels of the domain and spends a year in barrique, though this doesn't obtrude on the wine's aromatic profile of rich, slow-dropping, glowing blackberry, black cherry and chocolate. The palate combines the succulence and sweetness of blackberry and black cherry with something rather deeper and beefier. Look out for gratifying dark chocolate notes, plant essences and fleshy tannins. This is a majestically searching and powerful southern Syrah.
