Rich and vibrant with complex notes of honey, vanilla and butter with fine mouth-filling texture and a long refreshing finish. Given the consistent quality of his wines – both white Saumur and Saumur-Champigny – Jean-Pierre Chevallier of Château de Villeneuve is remarkably modest as well as being highly principled. His top cuvées are only released when they hit the required quality. In difficult vintages everything goes into the ‘domaine’ wine. The 100% Chenin Blanc single vineyard Les Cormiers is Château de Villeneuve’s top white Saumur, which ages brilliantly – the 1999 is still stunning! Handpicked and then vinified and aged in 500-litre barrels for 10 months.
