Domaine Mérieau in the Cher Valley was created by Jean-François Mérieau's grandmother at the end of the Second World War. It was expanded by Jean Merieau and is now run by his son Jean-François Merieau, who studied in Bordeaux and worked in Madiran, Sancerre, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and South Africa before taking over in 2000. Emilie, his wife, works with him on the now 35-hectare estate, which is now based in Montrichard in the premises previously owned by négociant Paul Buisse. Le Bois Jacou comes from 10 hectares of hand-picked Gamay aged between 10 and 60 years planted on south-facing clay limestone slopes. Tasted in late January this had soft easy drinking red fruits – a wine to drink young.
