Very discreet on the nose – still incredibly close and young. It has a cool, sweet sugared almond softness on the palate that evolves quickly into an intense and almost flinty, closed structure. Not so shockingly, this is very much tasting like a white wine, and the Rolle is really shining in the blend, more so than in previous vintages. It is surprisingly inexpressive and lacking in fruit, relying instead on sheer concentration and mineral fullness, which is very much what Château d'Esclans claims to aim for during blending. Extraction and concentration of fruit both take a backseat to sheer structural intensity – this is clearly not ready to be released, let alone drunk, and even after just 20 minutes in the glass it's evolving more towards ripe green apples and some riper yellow peaches. Smoky, flinty, creamy oak appears on the finish as it warms up. It's nice, but it's the whitest wine they've made yet.
