This wine from viticulturist and wine-maker Archil Utiashvili is made from 30-year-old Saperavi growing in the Tsinandali zone of Kakheti (Tsinandali is an appellation of origin but for white wines only, made from a blend of Rkatsiteli and Kakhetian Mtsvane). This wine was awarded a silver medal by the judges. I love its classically vivid, boisterous blackcurrant, plum and damson fruits: earthy, allusive, honeyed and floral. On the palate this whole-cluster Saperavi is deep, earthy, rich, amply textured and bright. It's an outstandingly athletic, lively, searching Georgian red in a fresh, vivacious style with ample juicy acidity, a delicate tannic structure and a poised finish.
