The nose is an unusual combination of smokiness and lemon zest, aligned to a little yeasty funk, but altogether very enticing and promising. With more air, riper notions appear that suggest ripe, yellow plum. The palate also etches that stone-fruit ripeness and generosity but is held in a taut, svelte, vivid body whose freshness is ripe but utterly aromatic and mouth-watering. In the hot years, such cool, marginal, lateral valleys come into their own - especially in this often overlooked region that boasts hills of slate steepness and cool, long-lived promise. The lemony length is magical.
