At nearly twenty years of age, the 2005 Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese from Egon Müller is still intensely youthful, with pronounced aromas of ripe peach and apricot fruit with hints of honeysuckle and a salty slate undertone. The wine lacks a prominent botrytis component and shows seemingly no developed ‘petrol’ aromas. The ripe fruit makes a moderately sweet impression on the palate, balanced by abundant acidity that propels the wine to a lengthy finish. It was perfect with moderately spicy Chinese food now and should continue improving for at least twenty years or more.
