There is no doubt that the Becker Pinot Noirs are muscular and structured in style, but of the three GGs presented here, Sankt Paul shows the most elegance and poise. Grown on French soil in Alsace, on a south-facing site sloping down towards Wissembourg, this is an enduring German classic. It is sinewy with real grip, but the tannins have rare finesse that speaks of the pure limestone this is rooted in. Cherry fruit broods underneath, captured at the point of vivid freshness. This needs time in bottle but will shine.
