Perhaps one of the most ancient grapes of southern Italy, Falanghina is famed for its acidity yet notorious for mixed quality. Thankfully, more producers are discovering that it can make quality wine. The La Guardiense cooperative makes some excellent bottlings under the guidance of top consultant Riccardo Cotarella. This has a hint of doughy lees with gentle tropical fruit and some green banana in a tangy and refreshing, midweight style. It's a little broader, more complex and spicier than many, but none the worse for it. Pick this up if you'd normally reach for a Mâcon Chardonnay.
