Mascarin is part of a project with consultant Luca d'Attoma, which began in 2016, to plant Syrah and Cabernet Franc in Emilia Romagna, and so far San Valentino is the only estate in the region to have planted these varieties. Mascarin Syrah spends 18 months in various sizes of tonneaux, 85% new. It expresses ripe red and black berry aromas along with balsamic and violet fragrance. In the mouth, dusty, wood-infused dark fruits are joined by tobacco, earth and potpourri. Very silky, with a subtle line of fresh acidity, it's a sapid and vertical style filled out by wood and cream on the long, succulent finish.
