With an east to southeast exposure, Amalia Cascina’s, 1ha vineyard in Le Coste di Monforte is the cooler of its two Barolo sites. It is fresh and clean but a bit disjointed in its execution. Red cherry, bitter chocolate and evocative truffly hints hold plenty of appeal, and bright acidity lends a satisfying bite to the concentrated core. Despite ageing in large 26 hectolitre casks, wood notes lurk in the wings. The tannins are chewy and textured, if a bit raw – perhaps another year in the bottle will sort it out.
