Gian Luca Colombo is a Langhe superstar in the making. He has a brilliant understanding of Nebbiolo, but I reckon he makes the best Barbera in the Langhe. This has the sumptuous velvetiness of a Central Otago Pinot Noir, with hedonistic black plum and dark cherry jam fruit, but with a firm line of freshness through the middle as a counterbalance, and sweet, pliable tannins. Utterly beguiling and seamless, the fruit comes from two plots of old vines ranging from 40 to 80 years old in Barolo, vinified and aged mostly in large casks with no new wood.
