Vinicola Arno was founded in 2017 by Michael Arno and his Portuguese wife Mara. A pure Barbera, Leone is their flagship wine, from two sites planted between 2010 and 2013 on poor clay-limestone soils – now being converted to organics. Fermented in steel tanks, the wine is transferred to new and second-use 300L French barrels for a year, then moved again to 25hl casks to continue its total ageing period of 18-24 months. Stephen Brook: Reserved nose, mocha, with oak subduing the fruit now. Suave and rich, concentrated, it has polish and intensity. Power but some elegance, too. Vincenzo Arnese: Intense nose, aromas of cedar and vanilla. Palate is more integrated yet very rich with dark, jammy cherry and nutmeg. Needs time.  Sara Bachiorri: Pronounced oak aromas, but the wine is concentrated and bold with dark fruits intertwined with spices, coffee powder and bright acidity.
