It was as recently as 2004 that Giuseppe Sedilesu made the first varietal Granatza – a variety traditionally blended in with Sardinia's local Cannonau for a bit of levity. More is being planted as part of the intense interest in Mamoiada’s up-and-coming wines, but there are currently fewer than 10 hectares in existence. It’s so high in acidity that the animals don’t eat it, preferring the sweeter Cannonau grapes, but this makes for a thrillingly unexpected white from these granitic soils. Salt, macadamia nuts, red apple and white tea give way to a palate built around zippy freshness, with a lightly tannic texture and a sense of mild bitterness from the variety’s small berries and thick skins. A white variety to watch – especially if you like whites with real impact such as Assyrtiko.
