The 100% Grillo grapes destined to become this Marsala were picked in 2009, and the wine fermented in concrete tanks. As the bottle's ‘storyteller’ label indicates, it was fortified in 2010 then aged for 13 years in a single oak cask 38m below ground and just 133m from the sea. The nose reveals a maritime soul punctuated by notes of bergamot, yellow blossoms and a hint of toasted grain. Bone-dry and linear yet mouthcoating, the palate strikes a balance between textural richness, tannic grip and a golden oxidative glow, all while maintaining astonishing freshness. With 21% of the original volume lost to the 'angel's share', what remains (only 2,940 bottles) is a concentrated and gloriously uncompromising Grillo in its most intellectual form. Serve cool, and let it spark conversation with oysters or aged cheese.
